Flesh Project 2016

For this Project I started by studying parts of a dead pig from a butchers and photographed areas to replicate artistically. To begin the research into the different medias I could use, I recreated a gelatinous organ out of clay. The contrasting hard set clay to the texture of bodily organs made this interesting and gross. I further developed my research until I was studying human flesh skin tones and the flesh from fruits. My work began to merge the two and I used portraiture and different media to paint fruit flesh into wounds on the body. I observed cut up fruit, their colours and textures and also put them under a microscope. This enlarged areas of the fruit you cannot see with the naked eye. I incorporated the microscopic fruit flesh, the observed fruit flesh and the pig flesh, together in contrast side by side in different portraits of myself.

For me, this was a step into gross territory of which made me really analyse texture, tone and shape, strengthening my skills.
